The Main Function of Torsion Springs in Garage Doors
There are two types of garage door springs – torsion and extension springs. Focusing on the former, this type of spring is often tucked into place with a metal shaft, found on the upper part of the garage door. Its main function is to provide a balance system to the garage door, by applying a force on the shaft as the garage door service Gilbert and closes. This force pulls the cable attached to the bottom of the door as the door completes its operation. Three factors mainly determine its maximum lift and cycle number: the inside diameter of the spring, its length, and the size of the wire which makes the spring.
The lift is defined as the maximum weight that the spring could actually carry or hold, while the cycle number determines the maximum number of operations that the spring could do before it reaches its breaking point. Different garage doors then have different torsion spring systems installed in them, mainly depending on the weight of the door and its use.
