Read aloud the following rhyme.

Pén Hé Pán

盆和盘

Zhèbiān yí ge rén,

这边一个人,

Tiāo le yì tiāo pén.

挑了一挑盆。

Nàbiān yí ge rén,

那边一个人,

Dān le yí dàn pán.

担了一担盘。

Pén pènglàn le pán,

盆碰烂了盘,

Pán pènghuài le pén.

盘碰坏了盆。

Mài pén mǎi pán lái péi pán,

卖盆买盘来赔盘,

Mǎi pán mǎi pén lái péi pén.

卖盘买盆来赔盆。

Nǐ péile pán,

你赔了盘,

Wǒ péi le pén.

我赔了盆。

Basins and Plates

Here comes a man

Who's carrying a load of wash basins.

There comes a man

Who's carrying a load of plates.

The wash basins hit and broke some plates,

The plates hit and damaged some wash basins.

You sell your wash basins to pay for the broken plates;

I sell my plates to pay for the damaged wash basins.

"a frog in a well" - a person with a limited outlook or narrow vision

E. shuizhong laoyue

水中捞月

"to fish for the moon in the water" - to make vain efforts

F. hujia huwei

狐假虎威

"the fox borrows the tiger's terror (by walking with the tiger)" - to bully others by flaunting one's powerful connections
